Me and my fiance decided to have a cupcake tier and a mini. cake on the top. The thing is we are making it ourselves. The baking part will be easy but decorating is another thing. I want to have flowers or maybe butterflies. Especially since the place we are getting married is famous of monarch butterflies. We have thought much about the decoration of the cake and cupcakes. But I have no idea where to start. I know it would be hard to do, but I want it to look somewhat professional. Any one knows a website that shows how to make fancy looking flowers or any kind of fancy cake/cupcake decorations?? Or maybe can just explain how to do the fancy looking decorating?

Since you are saving money doing it yourself — why not purchase some butterflies from a cake decorating store. Here is one:

This also popped up in the search - check out this for your wedding program:

For the mini cake on top I would cover it with white icing making sure it is as smooth as you can get it. Then, using the pastry bag and a small circular tip, make polka dots all over the sides. Keep them random and cover the top with some beautiful flowers. Talk with you local florist and order some flowers that do not have pesticides on them and have a friend or the bakery insert them directly into the cake just prior to the reception. If you use a hardier flower (not white roses) it should last. Or, look into silk flowers. Either way it will be beautiful.

As far as icing the cupcakes, I would use a pastry bag again with a star tip. This will give you some beautiful texture to the icing but you won't have to worry about it being perfect, the butterfly will cover most of it.

Oh, I have another idea — for your table arrangements, you can fill a flower pot (the inexpensive terracotta ones with a matching saucer) with soil and plant grass seed (2 weeks before the day) . Using hot glue, attach more of the same butterflies to different lengths of wooden skewers and insert them into the grass. Tie a beautiful satin ribbon around the flower pot.

I hope that gets your creative juices flowing. Congrats and good luck with the arrangements.

google wilton.com They have everything you need. Good luck

My brother is getting married next year during the christmas holidays they really need tips for cheap ideas for food, decoration and anything weddingey!!!!!!

Tell your Brother Congratulations! It will be the best day of his life!

Right….Ideas!…..

With regards to cheap food…..where is the reception??? For the Wedding Breakfast you could go for something really wintery like hot stew and dumplings with Veg, very cheap to make and is a sure fire winner with everyone! and for the evening reception you could go for Hot Beef or Pork sandwiches instead of a buffet (I always find buffets very wasteful anyway!)

Decorations……Candles, Candles and more Candles. get your selves to Ikea, I had (literally) hundreds of tealights everywhere at my wedding. little glass tealight holders are 9p. you can also get chunky church pillar candles from 12cm high to 80cm high! I can’t think of anything more christmasy and romantic than candles!

There’s no need to go wild on Flowers either, go traditional…head out for a walk with a pair of secatairs and use holly to decorate rather than splashing out loads of cash on flowers. Ivy is also a loverly green CHEAP way to decorate. maybe try a glass bowl with some sand inside (to match the colour theme) with a candle in and then wrap some Ivy around the base of the bowl or around the base of the candle ontop of the sand.

a nice idea for favours just sprung to mind…….. why not make your own ginger bread men and personalise it with the name of the guest etc.

Hope that helps a little.

It will be truely magical.

a reservoir for an oil lamp?

I am trying to make oil lamps out of conch shells for decorations and to give away as favors for my wedding. I don't think it will be that difficult with a little trial and error, but I just want to get some ideas as to what kind of sealant I should use to close off the tip of the shell so that I can drill a hole and put oil and a wick into it. Only genuine suggestions please…no smarta*s snide remarks. :] Thanks.

****By the way******
There is a company that has a patent for the process of sealing the shell in order to make an oil reservoir, and I just want to be clear that I am in no way trying or hoping to steal that patent. I would purchase the shells from that unnamed company but I don't have enough $$$ in my wedding budget to spend $20-30/shell

I would try Plaster of Paris in a fairly stiff mixture. If you smear some of it in the wrong place it is fairly easy to remove. Incidentally, check the patent on Google Patent. If it is more than 20 years old it will have expired and anyone is free to use the stuff in it. This is something that most patent holders definitely do not want you to know. (I work in patents).

Where do i find cake decorating tips on the internet?
Can anyone help me? I'm making a cake for my parents in law's 40th wedding anniversary (this sunday) i can't find any ideas that explain how to make the decorations ie flowers. Does anyone know of any good sites that could help. My thanks to you in advance. : )

Wilton.com

By the way, flowers are hard and take a lot of practice. Would be easier (and, no offense) probably come out better if you could pick up a nice sheet cake from the local bakery, grocery store, Sams Club, Costco…
